First walk of the year

Today I completed my first walk of the year. Since I will remotely be joining AngelSharum on her 100 miles in 90 days challenge , I was required to measure the distance I walked today, in my first thirty minutes of outdoors exercise in 2015.

Since, I just decided to join the challenge last night, I got a 1-day late start. At the moment I don’t have a device to measure the covered distance (I am working on it), I had to use Google Maps to get an approximation of the distance I walked today, and the results are encouranging. I got 2.6 Km (1.61 Miles) in 30 minutes, so I am still a little behind the required average, but walking a little longer and just a tad faster tomorrow I will be leveled at the 1.1 miles/day objective.

So AngelSharum this is our shared goal at PersonaPaper , how cool is that?

For all other PersonaPaper members, do you have a physical activity goal or objective for 2015 ?

I don't need to lose weight but I'd like to do some sports. This year I'll go to gym.

Feisty56 wrote on January 2, 2015, 6:32 PM

Good for you! I'm sure AngelSharum will enjoy having another challenge participant here on PP. I wish you both the best of success.

I'm currently going to the gym three times a week, but beginning in only fair physical shape. I am hoping that changes as time progresses.

I used to set an average daily goal of 20000 steps a day. It lasted until the pedometer went on strike.

I have a huge garden and I am always there strolling around. I also have an upstairs where i need to go. In other words I must be covering quite a bit of walking every day. It is no longer true that one must do it at one stretch. My walk is pretty brisk too.

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 1:54 AM

I have had great luck using mapyourwalk.com to map my walks. In fact, I should do that for the walk I took today. I forgot about it. You can even map your walk through a shopping center or parking lot.

LadyDuck wrote on January 3, 2015, 4:56 AM

nbaquero My normal walking speed is around 5 km for each hour. I can walk faster, but I will get tired sooner.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 5:54 AM

Good for you! I like to exercise as well, I don't go to the gym, but I try to walk at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes or so. It is also relaxing.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:03 AM

Feisty56 Thanks for your words, it is sure a great thing we can share a common goal with AngelSharum through Persona Paper.
I know you will be making a lot of progress, and will improve your fitness pretty quickly!

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:04 AM

scheng1 Ha Ha ... did you step on it? emoticon :winking: Well, nowadays you can use you smartphone, I am sure there is an app for that!

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:06 AM

That is true bestwriter being physically active does not require doing a single session per day. It seems to me you are a pretty active person.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:11 AM

Barbrad I could find that application, is it MyMyWalk? In any event, thanks for the tip, I will be looking into some sort of tracking app/tool once I get my cellular data feature back online (In about a week and a half).

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:12 AM

LadyDuck you are certainly a fast duck! How long do you walk for?

bestwriter wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:15 AM

Yes I am and that keeps me fit. Even climbing stairs is some kind of exercise.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 6:22 AM

Yes, working around the house, gardening, etc. all those are forms of physical activity, so that counts as well and keep us fit.

scheng1 wrote on January 3, 2015, 7:35 AM

The best pedometer is still Omran. My pedometer finally went to heaven after 5 years of faithful service.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:31 AM

scheng1 Really,it lasted 5 years? That is like millions of steps you took, you can even compete at Olympic Level!

LadyDuck wrote on January 3, 2015, 8:40 AM

I like to walk, I took this from my Father, I can walk for 3 to 5 hours when the season is not too cold and not too hot.

VinceSummers wrote on January 3, 2015, 9:02 AM

Watch out you don't cross the yellow tape! What do I mean? One year, one of the geographical maps showed, when you zoomed in, a crime-scene yellow tape. Did you know that?

Angeles wrote on January 3, 2015, 11:57 AM

Walking is really good. My hubby had some cholesterol few months ago and our doctor told him to walk some 30 minutes to reduce it. And, about me, my 2015 purpose is to start doing some exercise as my life is very sedentary.

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 7:21 PM

Well, I didn't know that, I will try hard not to cross the yellow tape next time I see one. Just curious, in what part of the world did the map show that yellow tape?

VinceSummers wrote on January 3, 2015, 7:58 PM

Ah, I don't recall. Checking Google as we speak... I can't find it. Funny. Maybe it's been quietly eliminated from searches...

nbaquero wrote on January 3, 2015, 10:07 PM

Yes Angeles I think it is one of the best forms of physical activity. Have your husband's cholesterol levels improved since he took up walking?

BarbRad wrote on January 3, 2015, 11:52 PM

Mapmywalk.com I'm going there now to see how far I walked yesterday. It's a neat site.

BarbRad wrote on January 4, 2015, 12:03 AM

I just mapped yesterday's walk. It was 1.41 miles, including through trails and parking lots.

nbaquero wrote on January 4, 2015, 6:20 AM

You don't have too, I was just curious. I know there are many "interesting" pictures in Google Maps.

nbaquero wrote on January 4, 2015, 6:31 AM

Ok, barbrad thanks for the clarification, I will be looking into MapMyWalk.com I did about 1.7 miles yesterday, and I am about to go for my Sunday walk. It is nice to share this with our fellow writers here at Persona Paper.

A present to myself is a pedometer. I plan to wear it all day. I need to move around more generally.

AngelSharum wrote on January 4, 2015, 11:21 PM

It is very cool. I'm glad you have joined me in the challenge. I hope we both succeed and feel healthier for it.

nbaquero wrote on January 5, 2015, 5:39 AM

You definely are in better shape than I am, I can not imagine myself walking 3 to 5 Hours in one outing.

LadyDuck wrote on January 5, 2015, 6:49 AM

My longest walk has been 7 hours, when we lived in France, we walked from one village to another through pedestrian pathway. I was exhausted.

nbaquero wrote on January 5, 2015, 8:46 AM

Well, you should definitely share that story, no a small feat LadyDuck . It makes my 30-min walks look like baby steps.

nbaquero wrote on January 5, 2015, 9:32 AM

Seren3 Good plan. In general I don't find the pedometer is really necessary, but I know it does help with motivation (and progress tracking).

nbaquero wrote on January 5, 2015, 9:33 AM

Absolutely, it is going to be fun. When I first saw your suggestion I immediately knew I wanted to do the challenge.

AngelSharum wrote on January 5, 2015, 12:52 PM

I'm glad it inspired you. I felt the same way when my friend on Facebook asked if any of us wanted to join her.

Angeles wrote on January 5, 2015, 1:24 PM

Ayayayay!! It will take me some time until I can convince him to follow the "doctor's rules"! haha Hope it will be soon, he needs to taje care of his health! And also, he isn't used to walk much. On the other hand, I had this morning an enjoyable walk, really good!👌

BodieMor wrote on January 5, 2015, 11:09 PM

What a great effort to make. I hope you joyfully stick to your new routine!

nbaquero wrote on January 5, 2015, 11:20 PM

I see, I thought your husband was already walking, in that case, good luck, you will need to be creative and give him some motivation, or just drag him along emoticon :winking:

nbaquero wrote on January 6, 2015, 6:21 AM

BodieMor thanks, I do hope I can complete this challenge succesfully. Do you have any exercise goal for 2015?

nbaquero wrote on January 6, 2015, 6:46 AM

Yeah, it was nice, I am used to do my regular walks, but joining this challenge gives it a special meaning.

AngelSharum wrote on January 6, 2015, 1:52 PM

That's good. It helps me when I have goals to accomplish and people to share them with.

valmnz wrote on January 30, 2015, 11:30 PM

With encouragement from my sister I installed a walking app on my phone. Now every time I walk I know how far I walked and for how long. It is quite a motivational tool to walk further. The basic one was free but I upgraded for a mere $2.

nbaquero wrote on January 31, 2015, 9:30 AM

valmnz How nice. I am using an Andriod App called "My Tracks" is good enough for my needs (and it's cost free.)
