Tommy Toy Fund

Here in eastern Connecticut, there is a charitable organization called the Tommy Toy Fund. It is a toy collection program for needy children and is forty years old this year. It started when a young girl wrote to a local newspaper. The girl had overheard her mother - a single parent - talking to a neighbor about not being able to get Christmas gifts for her two children because she had barely enough to pay the regular bills. The girl understood why she might not get any gifts that year, but she did not think that her younger brother Tommy would understand. The girl hoped that someone reading the newspaper would be kind enough to think of Tommy. The day after the letter was published in the newspaper, many people arrived at the newspaper's office with lots of gifts for Tommy. The gifts were distributed to Tommy and other needy children. The next December, readers of the newspaper called asking about the toy collection. A charity was born. Now thousands of children have a happier holiday because of one girls concern for her little brother.

Yes, I agree. That is why I love this particular charity ( and story) so much.
