The New York State Museum

I will start by sharing the link to the New York State Museum in Albany, NY because it will help those who would like to visit find out more: http://www.nysm.nysed.gov/

Albany, NY has plenty of family friendly locations and activities. One of our favorite is going to the New York State Museum. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. We always try to at least donate $1, sometime more when possible. The gift shop has reasonably priced items. One of my favorites that I purchased was a dream catcher made by Algonquin Indians.

They have many exhibits which remain there all year, but occasionally they have different exhibits featured for awhile. One year they had some beautiful flowers that were being exhibited and I took many pictures. We love going to the free carousel. Rides are every 15 minutes. We don't mind waiting for another ride or two. There is plenty of seating available as you wait and it's nice to read a book. Great lighting on the top floor. There used to be a food court upstairs. Not sure if it is permanently closed or just shut down for renovations.

We like to check out the minerals and rocks of NY. They have pottery shards and other items from the original settlers from NY. Then there is the Native American exhibit where you can see what their homes looked like back then. There are the stuffed animals - like the actual native animals from NY, but stuffed professionally by a taxidermist. There is the 9/11 exhibit which has the ambulance that was crushed by debris, a trailer that has the pictures of those missing in the attacks, a piece of the rubble, and more. I always cry when we go through that exhibit. There is the Sesame Street steps. Then there is an old subway car and turnstyle.

There is an area where the small children can go color, go on a computer, check out a fish tank, pretend to be an archaeologist. There are books for them to read and more. It is very nice and moms can watch their kids play. Sometimes they have activities and arts and crafts for the kids.

All in all, it is a great experience to go. We don't mind going once or twice a year and since we have been gone from Albany for almost two years, it is sure to be one of the scheduled field trips we have when we move back.

I enjoy going to that sort of museum also. When we went to Orlando to meet kids and grandkids for DISNEY!!!!, I enjoyed taking time away from all that and going downtown to the Museum. They have a great museum also. No kids were with me so I didn't notice that sort of activity.

I love museums. Now many have introduced activities for children -- like Make Your Own Coin and puzzles etc. with some connection with the exhibits in the room. But my most favorite museum in the world remains the New York Metropolitan Museum. Their paintings collection is fantastic.

Yes, it has been quite a while since I've gone to the Met or to MoMa.

You should go. Make a day of it. Carry some lunch with you or have something to eat at one of the many places on Lark Street.
