I Think I Know What I Want to Request from PersonaPaper
I've thunked and thunked and thunked some more and I think I know what PersonaPaper could really use on the homepage – Status updates!
Not the kind of thing we necessarily need to get paid for (unless we bring readers to a specific, paid page, anyway) but something wherewithal we might state a mood or a stray thought.
A great new way to be seen by visitors to the homepage. They'd not need to crowd out anyone's post(s). It could be a separate feed. But I think it'd make the homepage a lot more “homey.”
For myself, status updates are just one more detail I have to think about -- but usually don't. I can't remember a time when I've posted one myself. That being said, perhaps it is something the younger crowd -- or at least the younger thinking crowd -- uses and appreciates more than I.
I don't really think I feel a need for status updates. In fact, I think that's going a little too far towards the social networking side. I've already had one writing site try to declare itself a social network. Not interested in having that happen here. It's homey enough, just being with great folks like you :)
Since the homepage is just a landing page, or soon will be and we'll be broken up by sections soon, I think that maybe something better would be where people could post a "status" or "mood" on their profile.
I can see status updates as a possible feature on a profile page. It would be quite useful as a way to update regular followers on something important without making a full post. It means, for example, if I were to be having my surgery I could just put that and the date on my profile page and anyone who was curious about why I wasn't around could check my profile for any relevant information. A regular follower can still miss a post and then wonder what happened to a connection who might have announced in that post that they were taking a week off, or whatever.

So a certain extent many already do that with "personal" posts. It is a category that people can already choose to look at.

What's a status update? I ate breakfast? I'm here?

That is a possibility worth considering.

Not sure what a status update is...

If you are referring to FB status updates as an example - I don't use it. Neither do I change Skype or Google+ state. I simply don't think about it.

I'm not here enough to use something like that yet, but having it on one's profile sounds a bit easier to use or manage, actually.
