Proteus is the National Flower of South Africa...
This flower which symbolizes courage, strength, transformation, versatility, flexibility, adaptability, elusiveness and diversity has been known to mankind for more than 300 million years.
It has a distinct and unique look which separates it from other flowers. It is named after the Greek god Proteus who could change his appearance whenever he wanted to. It can be found in South Africa, Australia, South America, Madagascar and parts of Eastern Asia.
It was imported to Europe in the 17th century by botanists who were attracted by its beauty . It is the national flower of South Africa and is sometimes called “sugarbush” in English while the name in Afrikaans is “suikerbos”.
It has petals like thistles which grow from tiny red blossoms.
