The Ouija Board
When I was eight years old, my father's first cousin came to live with us. I will call her Pea. Pea was 16 and had lead a very troubled life. Pea's dad was significantly older than her mom. Her life up to that point had been very unstable. It continued to be unstable for quite some time and she only lived with us six months.
Pea's father had recently died and all of the adults were out of the house. We knew that Ouija Board was in the attic and one of us went up there to get it. Pea wanted to try to contact her father. It was the middle of the day, but we turned all of the lights out. Why we thought that would make a difference when sunlight was streaming through the windows I have no idea.
After we thought we set it up correctly, Pea, my older sister, and I sat down to try to contact her father. Apparently her father was not in a talkative mood. But my dear sister never missed an opportunity to scare me. She made the planchette tell me I was going die. Oh it was not pretty. She did finally confess to her misdeed and informed me "Well, you are going to die some day!" Crisis averted.
But why was that danged Ouija Board up in the attic anyway? We later learned that the adults had been using it a couple of years before. That time was not as innocent. It "knew" things it could not possibly know. One night, my mother and uncle had sat down to use it while my father was at work. My mother and her brother were part of a blended family. My mother's father and his family were not ever to be discussed in that home. My mother who is always a skeptic asked the board only a question she and her long-deceased grandfather knew the answer to. Mom took her fingers completely off the planchette so her brother's fingers were the only ones guiding the device. To Mom's surprise the answer to the question was spelled out. It was not a yes or no answer either.
So what was it?
