My Pet Facebook Peeve

I spent a bit of time on this morning, and as I started to interact with my friends again, I was reminded of the thing I hate most about it. Facebook thinks it can read my mind. It constantly interferes when I'm trying to make a comment. There was a lot of talk about ice bucketing there today. I'm so out of it I'd never heard of it. But if I started to comment I often could only write the first few letters of a word before Facebook would finish it for me by supplying someone's name that started with those letters. Hypothetical example, which fortunately didn't happen: I would start to say something about ice and Facebook might helpfully supply Ice Buckets for Every Need before I could even hit the space bar.

I just went back to find a real example, but, of course, I didn't type anything that triggered it. No more time trying to find the posts I commented on earlier that did set this off. All I know is it's a pain when it happens. I have start typing again and then quickly add a space or the next letter to keep Facebook for inserting something I don't want. Am I the only one this bothers? Does anyone know how to turn this off? I can't find it in the help pages.

I can't help- I'm a VERY occasional user of Mark Zuckerberg's baby.

LeaPea2417 wrote on August 24, 2014, 7:35 PM

That happens all the time to me on facebook and yes just like you I have to quickly add a space. It is very annoying. I don't think there is anyway of turning it off.

BarbRad wrote on August 24, 2014, 9:11 PM

I kind of figured that, considering our past history.

BarbRad wrote on August 24, 2014, 9:12 PM

I'm glad I'm not alone in finding this annoying.

So far so good. Perhaps my comments do not include those popular and trendy words like 'ice'. - so much is being talked about celebrities pouring ice on them (lol)

It's all part of Facebook's continuing effort to gather all the data it possibly can about you - it's trying to encourage you to tag other pages or other people, so that they'll have as many ways as possible to link to you as part of a dossier that they sell to advertisers. It's insidious.

BarbRad wrote on August 24, 2014, 10:52 PM

I picked that example out of the air.

BarbRad wrote on August 24, 2014, 10:52 PM

It's also infuriating.

bestwriter wrote on August 24, 2014, 11:22 PM

I know you did but that is how face book works I guess :)

There are only two things that I ever attempt to do on FB. I only have an account there to be able to read information that is written on other people's accounts that I need and cannot find elsewhere and to play games where it is necessary to exchange power-up thingees with other game players that I know in order to be able to win or help them win.

BarbRad wrote on August 25, 2014, 2:23 AM

Where do you find the time to play games on there? I do use it to find out more about people I meet in other places.

I hate that too, but not as much as I hate the suggested posts. Because my relationship status is 'engaged' all I get is adverts for wedding stuff, now I can understand the targeted marketing and I am fine with the ads ad the side being targeted to me, but the suggested posts that show in my actual feed are annoying

AliCanary wrote on August 25, 2014, 6:38 AM

That only happens to me with people's names, usually--it sounds like yours are triggering ads, which sounds horrible! Whenever I try to start a sentence with "The" or "There", it always shows me &TheresaWiza 's pretty face, lol!

My hugest gripe with Facebook is that no matter HOW many times I change my preference on the news feed to "Most Recent", it ALWAYS goes back to "Top Stories". WTF, Facebook? I TOLD you what I wanted!

AliCanary wrote on August 25, 2014, 6:40 AM

Congratulations, by the way :)

melody23 wrote on August 25, 2014, 10:03 AM

OMG yes I hate that, happens to me on my phone all the time and until recently I couldn't fix it on the mobile version

JanetJenson wrote on August 25, 2014, 11:48 AM

I have some brick and mortar friends and family that are in the words of one "slightly addicted" to some FB games.

LoudMan wrote on August 25, 2014, 2:41 PM

There's an easy fix for every pet peeve of Facebook. Quit giving them traffic.

BarbRad wrote on August 25, 2014, 3:08 PM

Those bug me, too, but they are much easier to ignore than the auto fill. And I also offer my best wishes.

BarbRad wrote on August 25, 2014, 3:10 PM

Too bad we can't just get our FB friends to move over here, but most of them would probably balk at writing 500 literate characters instead of just hitting a share button.

BarbRad wrote on August 25, 2014, 3:11 PM

True. But a lot of our networking groups are there.

BarbRad wrote on August 25, 2014, 3:13 PM

That would be very annoying.

LoudMan wrote on August 25, 2014, 3:48 PM

They're not worth it. What we now call "networking" is what our grandparents used to call gossiping. :)

BarbRad wrote on August 25, 2014, 8:21 PM

Not so. The real networking groups share valuable information and hints with each other.

I spend very little time on Facebook. I mostly use it to promote my posts. I used to keep up with many of my friends' posts, but now that we don't have an option to choose the most recent posts, I miss most of them.

Rhymis wrote on August 27, 2014, 4:56 AM

LOL I get miffed every time that happens to me, too! :D

BarbRad wrote on August 27, 2014, 7:30 PM

I probably check into FB once a week unless a notification lures me there. How much traffic to you get on your writing page?

BarbRad wrote on August 27, 2014, 7:39 PM

I guess we should wish all our problems were this small.

OldRoadsOnceTraveled wrote on August 27, 2014, 11:07 PM

Not much. The page only has a few likes so far. Maybe I should use my writing to draw attention to the page for awhile instead of the other way around.
