WTF News?!!! - News That I Don't Care About But Make a Post With

Presenting the first edition of # WTFNews?!!! News that I particularly do not care about but still make a post about it. What? Does that make sense? Nothing makes sense in this world!

Anyway, on to the news. In a recent festival in one of the southern provinces in the country, a comedian made a joke about calling the women from that province hipon . is the local word for shrimp and in our street parlance, hipon refers to a person who is ugly but has a great body. You know, like when you eat shrimp, you toss the head and eat the body?!!

Yeah, us Pinoys are weird like that when it comes to street lingo. Anyway, the comedian said this during one of the programs in the festival and in attendance was the mayor of the city along with other city and provincial officials. The joke didn't sit well with them. The officials thought of the joke as an affront to the sensibilities of the people of the province. Details are sketchy but it appears representatives or the organizers of the event approached the comedian and asked him to issue a public apology right then and there. The mayor of the city is known for his no-nonsense approach when it comes to dealing with criminals. It has long been rumored that he supports vigilante groups hence the zero crime rate in the city and in the province in general. The hapless comedian issued the apology.

End of story right? No, just now, the city council has declared the comedian # personanongrata and because of this resolution, the comedian is not anymore welcome to visit the city.

What say you fellow PPers? Was the comedian out of line for throwing such a joke? Is the resolution declaring the comedian persona non grata a bit of an over reaction?

Feel free to chime in or you can just say... WTF?!!

I guess it doesn't much matter to me. I think a lot of entertainers step over a line they shouldn't cross, and I don't think they should just get a pass. But I'm not sure the mayor was right, either.

Sounds like a publicity stunt for the mayor. He's hardly going to lose votes by "standing up" for the honor of local woman. In general, i don't like restrictions on freedom of speech. This just sounds like a bad joke.

well he said that he did not that the term meant something else and really did apologize too sensitive people

Sounds like everyone's panties got wadded up too much! They all need to get over themselves.

WOW - hard to say, not knowing different cultures. Here we'd not even bat an eyelash. Good gosh. :( People get wadded over the silliest of things. Though degrading women is crappy. Degrading anyone is crappy. But I do like to laugh and often do at my own expense. ACCK. lol.

PS: I thought we tossed the tails. I'm so confused... emoticon :straight-face:

It gets up my nose when people are offended on other peoples behalf..

It's his right to be an obnoxious twerp, and it's their right to tell him he's not welcome. Actions have consequences.

The mayor needs to get a sense of humor, comedians tell jokes, jokes are not true statements.

BarbRad , yeah, this seems to be a case of 'I really don't care but then again, I want to know who crossed the line.' kind of things.

allen0187 wrote on August 22, 2014, 9:10 PM

Well, of course, he would say that. I doubt if he will admit what he truly meant. LOL!

allen0187 wrote on August 22, 2014, 9:11 PM

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I think the mayor and city officials over reacted. Of course, the comedian wasn't using his head when he dropped that comment.

Yeah, I guess, it really does depend on the culture. The mayor of that city is known as a no-nonsense mayor so pulling off a stunt like that really didn't sit well with him. Agree with you that no one deserves to be degraded.

P.S., not really sure what to think as I eat everything, head, tails, shells and all! LOL!

allen0187 wrote on August 22, 2014, 9:36 PM

sanmar , but jokes are half meant. LOL!

allen0187 wrote on August 22, 2014, 9:36 PM

That's one way to look at it.

allen0187 wrote on August 22, 2014, 9:37 PM

It was a bad joke by the comedian AND ON the comedian. LOL!

allen0187 wrote on August 22, 2014, 9:39 PM

The mayor felt like he had to protect the honor of the women.
