Hybrid Cars - The way forward
I have always been a fan of the traditional petrol Engine. Here in Japan the Hybrid cars are very popular nowadays, even though they can be twice the price of a traditional petrol engine car. I took my car to have it's bi-yearly check and the Honda garage gave me a courtesy car for a couple days. The car was a Honda Fit Hybrid. So I thought to myself, let's see what all this fuss is about.
The first thing I noticed was how silent the engine was when turning the ignition. Not coughing sound like the traditional engine, just a slight rumble with immediate kick in then it felt like the engine was off. I then drove off, very quiet and smooth, however when I put my foot down, there was an immediate acceleration like a rocket and the wheels spun. I thought wow how can you get so much power and torque from a 1.3 Liter Engine. I realizes that it was the efficiency of the electric motor.
At around 40km I could hear the petrol motor kick in and it drove like a normal car then, but as I decelerated I notices via the dashboard indicators that it was charging up the electric engine at the same time.
Expensive however I guess it works out cheaper in the long run in terms of fuel costs.
